Why a Gladiator?

“Greetings, welcome to the ludus gladiatorius of Festus.” Brutus is lying face down on the physician’s bench. He’s lost his fight against the net man and adding to the pain of his defeat is a minor cut to his leg – the permitted jab with the trident from his opponent.

“This won’t hurt…”

“AI.”

“… much.” finished Philosophos as he placed the sponge dripping with vinegar aside and began dressing the wound.

“Is going to leave a scar!!!”

“True.”

“Another ugly scar!!!”

Philosophos looked intently at him and allowed him to vent his feelings. Brutus’ tense body relaxed.

“Your perspective determines your reality.”

“What you say!?”

““The Doctrix, she has written, “Your perspective determines your reality.” You, you see your scars as ugly, shameful. The great gladiators? They see ‘beautiful scars’- evidence of their bravery to fight mighty warriors – records of each fight, losses and victories. Do you now see? Your perspective, it determines your reality. There finished. Better?””

Brutus scowled as he limped out. He thought to himself, “STVLTE. Idiot, is that one.” Still, he couldn’t stop thinking that maybe there was some truth to the words of the Doctrix.

Much later that night…

The sound of cats screeching and hissing in a distant alley. Then quiet. Brutus is sitting deep in thought, in the dark solitude of his cell. This was his refuge, a place to be quiet and to think. Think or sleep. There isn’t anything else to do after the guards chained then locked each gladiator up, alone for the night.

“Is all thanks to Spartacus, these chains!” he muttered.

The thoughts of Brutus followed the sequence of events: Spartacus along with other slave gladiators, kitchen knives, overpowered guards, scaled walls, escape, then thousands of discontent slaves emboldened to flee, uprising, an army of resentful slaves fighting to be free, terror through the land, Rome’s armies beaten and beaten; freedom just ahead. Every Roman knows this story, especially, the slaves. And how it ended, oh, they all know what Plutarch had written in his Life of Crassus that Spartacus was surrounded and cut in pieces fighting Crassus’ army…

Brutus’ thoughts were becoming more settled. The words of the physician had stung like the vinegar but they were somehow cleaning out his attitude and his emotional turmoil. The words of the Doctrix, “Your perspective determines your reality.”

His thoughts turned now, soothed just a little, to his objective- How? How would he get out?

You’ve just been reading an excerpt from my book CHANGE THAT CAREER. You may very well be asking yourself, “Why a gladiator, Ara? After all, what could the struggles of a fighter in ancient Rome teach me about changing my career in modern times?”

Well, lots.

The clue is in the last phrase in the excerpt – his overwhelming life-and-death question, How? How would he get out? And this became my question. How could I possibly find credible, realistic ways for Brutus to change his career, before it was too late. It was a challenge I never expected when I began writing the book. Perhaps, I should take you back to how it all began and grew to reach that point.

It all started where it shouldn’t, as so often happens. Writers will tell you that characters take on a life of their own. You start with a vague idea of that person and their personality and life starts to emerge. This was the case with Brutus.

So, beginning at the beginning, I was creating a video on career change strategy called, you guessed it, CHANGE THAT CAREER. I’m thinking to myself that I want a story line that takes someone who’s had enough. But something quirky. A gladiator! Search. Find. A photo of a modern gladiator competition with the one getting trounced by a guy with a trident. And then came that unforgettable line:

“I CANTA DOH VEEZ ENY MOW!”

Brutus has a very small role. He’s had enough. From there, the video sets out expert, systematic strategy to a successful career change. Near the end, Brutus is mentioned again with fresh career possibilities…

Brutus could be on his way to a new vocation as a bodyguard to a Roman celebrity, a military commander, a…

Then again…

He might be the proud, new owner of Brutus Fashions.

ELE GUN TE

After creating this tightly crammed precis of how to successfully change career using expert principles, I knew I had to expand it into a step-by-step book that could help anyone who wanted to seamlessly leave one career and enter into their dream vocation. And that’s when Brutus took on a life of his own in his quest to change that career.

So, do you feel like our friend Brutus? Finding yourself at a place where you’re looking at career change because you can’t do this anymore or for one of many other reasons? Then, you’re at the right place. I want to help you do just that!

Did Brutus change that career before it was too late?
